About Madeira
Madeira is a lovely Portuguese holiday island in the Atlantic north of the Canary Islands. It has acquired a bit of a reputation as a holiday destination for middle-aged people, partly because it offers a selection of gardens to visit and exotic flowers. The landscapes of Madeira are dramatic, with mountains and sheer cliffs going down to the sea. The vegetation is lush and the entire island is crisscrossed with hiking trails. It has a lot to offer people who enjoy walking.
There are beaches but because the island is of volcanic origin, some of the beaches have black sand. Much of the coastline is rocky.
The volcanic visitor centre and lava tunnels are interesting to visit.
